GB · GBC · GBA DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES

From first project<br />to first release.

Choose a starter project, build and test your ROM, then find the right way to share it. Practical starting points for all three systems.

Start with a working project.

Pick your system and follow its path. Each one takes you from setup to an exported ROM.

Build from a working example rather than an empty project.

  1. Follow Butano’s devkitARM setup guide, including the GBA development tools.
  2. Build and run an included example. Make one small change before starting your own project.
  3. Use Butano’s template and point its Makefile to your Butano folder. Build a .gba ROM and test in mGBA.

BUILD · TEST · DEPLOY

Get it out of the editor.

Your source project is what you edit. A ROM is the exported file people play. Keep both.

  1. Export a build.

In GB Studio, use Export ROM for a .gb or .gbc file. With Butano, build your project to produce a .gba file. Keep a copy of the source project so you can make the next version.

  2. Test the exported ROM.

Open the exported file in desktop mGBA. Check movement, sound, restarting and any save features. For real hardware, use a flash cartridge compatible with your target system.

  3. Share or deploy.

GB Studio can also Export Web: zip the generated web folder and upload it as an HTML game on itch.io, or host its contents on a web server. For ROM distribution, upload your exported ROM to a host that supports file downloads and include the system and controls.
